In Memoriam: Arthur (Tony) William Crawford Morgan

It is with deep sorrow and a sense of profound loss that we bid farewell to Arthur (Tony) William Crawford Morgan, whose remarkable life journey stands as a testament to adventure, achievement, and an irreverent spirit that defied convention. Tony passed away on 9th April 2024, leaving behind a legacy that echoes through the realms of sports, business, and philanthropy.

Born in Rochester, Essex, Tony's early years were shaped by a modest upbringing, yet his indomitable spirit and desire to contribute led him to join the Air Sea Rescue at the age of seventeen as World War II was drawing to a close. In this role, he displayed exceptional talent and a refreshing irreverence for the establishment, traits that would characterize his illustrious career.

Tony's list of achievements is nothing short of extraordinary. His prowess as an athlete culminated in the winning of an Olympic silver medal, sailing a Flying Dutchman with Keith Musto, at the Tokyo Games in 1964, a testament to his dedication and sporting excellence. As a successful entrepreneur, Tony held key roles in the waste management and renewable energy sector, notably serving as Chairman of Purle Brothers, which was later acquired by Redland plc in 1971. His executive roles with Redland, Wimpey Waste Management, Wistek, Re-Energy and Octopus Investments showcased his visionary leadership and commitment to environmental sustainability.

Beyond the boardroom, Tony dedicated himself to public service, serving as a governor of the BBC from 1972 to 1977. His contributions played a pivotal role in upholding the BBC's values of independence and journalistic integrity. He was also Chief Executive of the not-for-profit Industrial Society from 1994 to 2000.

A champion of democracy and social justice, Tony was an active member of the Campaign for Social Democracy and the National Committee for Electoral Reform. His commitment to creating a fair and inclusive society extended to his involvement in various charitable endeavors, including serving as chairman of the Hunger Project and Youth At Risk, now known as Grit.

For all his accomplishments in sports, business, and philanthropy, Tony often spoke with the greatest pride about his role as a loving husband to Valerie and a devoted father to his three sons, Simon, Christopher, and Timothy. To him, nothing surpassed the importance of being a family man.

In the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future." Tony Morgan's life embodied this sentiment as he touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the world. He will be remembered not only for his achievements but for the warmth, love, and irreverent spirit that endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service to celebrate Tony Morgan's extraordinary life will be held on April 22nd at Greenacres Woodland Burial Site, Jordans, HP9 2XB

The family requests privacy during this difficult time and suggests contributions in Tony's memory be made to www.raceagainstdementia.com, www.alzheimers.org.uk or www.thameshospice.org.uk

May Tony rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
