The Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) number list for 2024 has now been released. The numbers are revealed by the RYA annually to coincide with the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show supported by Sunsail (24-25 February, Farnborough International).

Worldwide scheme

A huge hit with sailing clubs, the worldwide PY scheme has made it possible for boats to race against each other for over 70 years. The numbers are reviewed yearly and amended to keep handicaps up to date to include new boats and adaptations of current classes.

"We're delighted to kick off another season of exciting dinghy racing by launching the revised list of PY numbers this weekend. PY Online has gone from strength to strength and has revolutionised the way in which racing is analysed and reported on" said Adam Parry, RYA Technical Manager.

"This year we've developed a new class list which we'd like to encourage clubs to base their class identities on. This list has a unique ID to help us ensure the data gets assigned to the correct configuration".

Clubs are encouraged to review the list and use the class configurations created. Any class that doesn't appear on the list can contact

The RYA have also been working closely with Sheffield Hallam University to review the system which will help identify any areas where the formula can be approved.

More information on this will be coming soon.
