Kingston ready to host Sail Canada Championships for seven fleets starting Saturday

Kingston will see several different sailboats races, most of them Olympic classes, by over the next week as seven fleets will participate in the Sail Canada Senior or Youth Championships over the next eight days, from August 14th to the 22nd.

A total of 130 sailors from across the country will take part in these competitions hosted by CORK/Sail Kingston based on the following schedule:

August 14-17:

  • Sail Canada ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) Senior Championships
  • Sail Canada ILCA 7 (Laser) Senior Championships
  • Sail Canada Finn Senior Championships
  • Sail Canada Kite Foiling Senior Championships
August 19-22:
  • Sail Canada 49er Senior Championships
  • Sail Canada 49er FX Senior Championships
  • Sail Canada 29er Youth Championships
The event will feature the first edition of the Sail Canada Kite Foiling Senior Championships, as athletes are preparing for their first Olympic competitions to be held ahead of the 2024 Games in Paris.

The Sail Canada 29er Youth Championships will be contested by competitors who are 19 years of age or less. Athletes who are taking part will be looking to earn a spot and represent Canada at the World Sailing Youth World Championships to be held in December in Oman.

Sail Canada Youth Championships usually include the i420, Club 420, ILCA 4 (Laser 4.7), ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) and 29er classes at the same event. But this year, due to Covid restrictions and precautions that need to be taken, the competition will take the form of as a series of smaller events. The Championships for the Club 420 class were held July 26-29, followed by the ILCA 4 (4.7) and ILCA 6 (Radial) Youth Championships August 9-12. The 29er event will take place August 19-22.

To ensure the safety of the sailors who will be taking part in the competition, the event will be held in accordance with all public health and social measures that are in place.
