Located along the east shore of the Adriatic in some of the world's most spectacular cruising grounds, Montenegro is rapidly becoming a favourite summer yachting and charter destination. And Porto Montenegro, with its 450 slips, upscale marina village and five-star hotel, is emerging as the host of a series of events this summer, including regattas, a fashion show, concerts, and art exhibitions.
Montenegro has a long and rich history, dating to the Roman Empire, Byzantine rulers, Ottoman invaders and more recently the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and its subsequent breakup. Montenegro declared its independence in 2006, and the new government decided to invest in tourism as a main economic force. Porto Montenegro was the first investment of its kind, founded in 2010 in the heart of breathtaking Boka Bay, a UNESCO-protected site.
The marina now has a fuel dock with duty-free fuel, onsite customs and immigration, a chandlery, repair facilities, provisioning, a wine and liquor store, 24-hour manned security and WiFi. Porto Montenegro also has a 200-apartment development, a shopping complex with many of the world's leading fashion brands, waterfront restaurants and bars and a Five-Star Regent Hotel with 80 luxury suites.
And it's a sports haven, with kite surfing, wake boarding, scuba diving, hiking and mountain biking. You can climb up the walls of San Giovanni fortress for incredible views of the bay, or take a boat out to the Church of the Lady on the Rocks on a tiny island off the small coastal village of Perast.
