Doug Zurn designs new 35-knot Hylas M58, another classic powerboat

Doug Zurn, one of the most prolific designers in the United States, has teamed up with Hylas Yachts to create a new Hylas M58 powerboat that seems to carry all of his signature lines for the traditional sailboat builder. The M58 actually is Hylas' second venture into the powerboat market; it introduced a Hylas M44 at the Palm Beach show in March. The company says it wanted to incorporate many traditional elements from classic powerboats in the past into the new 58, to help more sailboat owners move into the amenities of power. And the M58 has the long sheer line, low profile and beautiful tumblehome that appear in most of Zurn's work.

Zurn, the head of Zurn Yacht Design in Marblehead, Massachusetts, said the new 58 will have Volvo Penta IPS pod drives, which place the engines aft, and the boat will carry a 16.5-degree deadrise at the transom. "It's more of a planing hull rather than semi-displacement hull," Zurn said. "With a fine entry forward warping into that medium deadrise aft, we expect her to be a leader in fuel economy in the class." The hull has wide chines and lifting strakes. With the standard power of twin 725-hp Volvo IPS950s, the boat will cruise at 23 knots and top out at 27 knots, and it will have a range of 800 nm. With optional 1,000-hp Volvo IPS1350s, it will cruise at 30 knots and top out at 35 knots.

The boat comes in both flybridge and sedan versions. In the sedan version, there's a sundeck on top of the house, with sun pads and room to store some SUPs. The flybridge version will have a venturi windshield and a generally low profile to keep the boat's vertical clearance low for bridges.

The salon is open, with good sightlines all around. The galley is aft, and glass doors fold out of the way, creating a seamless space between the salon and galley and the cockpit. The aft galley window retracts into the counter, which then serves as a bar for the cockpit.

Below, the accommodation deck has three staterooms and three heads. A stacked washer/dryer is in a locker in the foyer to port. Forward is stateroom with an island queen berth and en suite head and shower. Another stateroom with a queen berth is amidships; the berth is athwartships to starboard and the head and shower are to port. The third stateroom is forward on the starboard side with twin berths or space for a small office; the head is across the foyer to port and doubles as a day head.

Hylas builds its boats at Queen Long Marine in Taiwan; it is one of the most established builders there. Zurn has designed power boats for MJM, NEB, Duffield, Williams, Shelter Island, Marlow, Vanquish and other builders. He also designed Billy Joel's 57-foot commuter Vendetta.

The new Hylas 58 is due to be launched in the fall of 2019, with a base price of $2 million.
