Rhyl sailors celebrated their club getting OnBoard status with children from local schools taking part in a mini-festival.

All 12 of the competitors were new to sailing, getting the opportuntity through the OnBoard scheme which is aimed at increasing the number of people who get the chance to try to sport.

Welsh Sailing chief executive Steve Morgan handed over the OnBoard plaque to Sue Ellis, Rhyl YC OnBoard Co-ordinator, to officially give that status to the club.

Children between the ages of 8-14 from Rhyl High School and Blessed Edward Jones took part in the regatta.

“It was really impressive to see all the volunteers from Rhyl YC working together to show what great sailing can be offered at Marine Lake,” said Denbighshire OnBoard Development Coach Nic Wymer. Run by the RYA, OnBoard is a grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18, through schools, youth groups and training centres.

Over a ten year period OnBoard aims to introduce a minimum of 500,000 children to sailing and windsurfing in the UK, converting over 10% of them into regular participants. So far it’s nicely on track.

For more information about how to get involved in sailing visit the RYA’s website www.rya.org.uk or the OnBoard website www.ruob.co.uk
