Fisheries Officers were alerted by a call to 13FISH about an illegal fishing activity in the Wonga Park area of the Yarra River last week. Fisheries Victoria Acting Regional Fisheries Officer Wendy Skene said last Friday evening Fisheries Officers covertly watched a group of four anglers who were reported to be illegally fishing the Yarra River. 'When the anglers were intercepted they were allegedly found to be using illegal fishing equipment in the form of 24 set lines in addition to six fishing rods,' Ms. Skene said. 'Anglers are reminded that the entitlement for recreational fishing for inland waters such as the Yarra is two rods or hand lines per person.' Additionally they must be attended at all times. Ms. Skene said fishing equipment was also seized and each man will receive a number of infringement notices totalling more than $1,400. The men were also found to be fishing without fishing licences. She said this was an excellent example of how the public can assist Fisheries Victoria by calling the fisheries offence reporting line 13FISH, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
