Grey skies but hot times in Jervis Bay

'Jervis Bay Jam'    Harbourside Media
The team at SBM Sydney doesn’t do anything by halves and the Jervis Bay Jam was no exception.

On the morning of November 17, around 60 adventurous individuals aboard 15 luxury power boats made their way from SBM at the Spit in Sydney’s Middle Harbour bound for the crystal clear waters of Jervis Bay.

The journey was planned as a warm-up for the upcoming SBM 2013 Lord Howe Island adventure, but with strong SE winds and occasional light rain, conditions were anything but warm. As boats battled 1 – 1.5 metre swells heading into the breeze, skippers came to appreciate the real benefit of taking on a 90 nm, 5 hour journey down the coast with the comfort of the SBM owner fraternity all around them.

The trip gave everyone a taste of blue water running complete with some spectacular sightings of whales along the way. When the fleet finally reached Jervis Bay, the destination certainly made the journey even more worthwhile.

Jervis Bay is still an unspoilt paradise with its crystal clear waters and abundant marine life. The kids were able to play amongst pods of dolphins frolicking around their tenders as if it was a game of cat and mouse. Days were filled scuba diving, paddle boarding, kayaking wakeboarding and waterskiing, while the less energetic spent their time soaking up the spectacular vistas.

Numerous species of fish were caught, but the real fun was one angler hooking a 3kg plus Black Drummer, a fish renowned for its powerful fight and great taste. A total of 40 were caught and 37 released in less than 4 hrs.

As SBM Dealer Principal Steve Batton noted, 'The Bays of Jervis are buzzing with aquatic life and the diving is incredible, while the crays and abalone particularly plentiful.' A funny thing happened on Saturday afternoon when Steve Batton was suddenly seen diving quickly underwater only to return to the surface with a large Port Jackson Shark in his arms for all to enjoy and kids to pat.

Saturday night saw a wig and black tie cocktail party on the beach, a novel way of enjoying fine food and spectacular bay. A cocktail bar was set up on the sand with the blender going full bore powered by a portable 2kva Honda Genset. The freshest of margaritas were enjoyed by all as the sun set over the bay.

After the cocktail party, the SBM team put on a 5 star banquet including some of the best oysters ever tasted. Then news came through over dinner of an approaching storm due mid the next day, prompting an earlier departure on Sunday morning.

Despite a fairly relaxed trip back, the boats reached Sydney in just over 3 hours cruising at around 26-27 knots, while other boats headed to Port Hacking some even further north to Port Stephens.

The following day Steve and the SBM team were inundated with messages of thanks with many wishing it could have been longer, so planning for a repeat journey is already underway. In the meantime, there’s the Cruise for a Cure in February, Lord Howe Island in April and a trip north to Bundaberg for the fishing and diving. You can be assured of one thing at SBM – there is never a shortage of energy as Steve and the team are constantly looking at ways of getting their clients out on the water to escape the daily routine. Life’s to short as Steve often says, and here is a dealership truly lives by that motto.
