Two new patrol vessels for Sydney region

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has taken delivery of two new patrol vessels for the Sydney region, RMS Acting Director Maritime Michael Wright announced today.

'These patrol boats will replace existing vessels which have served their time ensuring NSW waters are kept as safe as possible,' Mr Wright said.

'The existing seven metre Vision catamaran patrol boats with twin Honda 150 horsepower motors are being replaced with 7.2 metre Seatamer catamarans with twin Honda 175 horsepower motors for a combined cost of $473,500.

'RMS boating safety officers (BSOs) patrol State waters – including rivers, lakes and dams.

'Coastal BSOs also patrol offshore to three nautical miles to keep safe the estimated 1.5 million people who go boating each year.

'BSOs conduct daily random checks of recreational and commercial vessels to ensure appropriate safety equipment is being carried, inspect moorings, manage on-water traffic including for large aquatic events such as the Sydney Hobart race start and New Year’s Eve celebrations on Sydney Harbour, and ensure compliance with marine regulations and boating safety requirements.

'RMS patrol boats are often used cooperatively on operations such as random breath testing on the water or water traffic management of marine mammals such as whales or dolphins with NSW Police or National Park representatives,' Mr Wright said.
