Preparation for the 2020 Superyacht Cup Palma is picking up pace as the festive season approaches, with prospective entries lining up to join the fleet at next June's celebration of sail.
With six months to go to the 24th edition of Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta, organisers are fielding inquiries from owners and captains around the world, expressing interest in signing-up for the party at the home of Mediterranean superyacht sailing.
Leading the charge are the 66.9m carbon Baltic Yachts superketch Hetairos and Frers-designed 27m Swan 90S Freya, the first early doors prospective participants on the 2020 Superyacht Cup Palma entry list.
Also eyeing a return is an SYC regular, the 45m Tripp Design Wally yacht Saudade, while the 37m Dubois designed performance cutter Genevieve could be in line to make her SYC debut next summer.
"It is always exciting to feel that the countdown has begun and that our preparations are already coming together, even with six months to go to next June," said SYC Event Director Kate Branagh.
"The Superyacht Cup Palma has always been about diversity and delivering the best possible experience to the owners, skippers and crews who take part, and with the new Performance Class lining up alongside the Original Superyacht Class and Corinthian Spirit Superyacht Class, we really can offer something for everyone.
"The team and I would like to wish all of our Superyacht Cup participants and partners - past, present and future - a very happy Christmas and a great 2020."
Freya, in particular, is a likely potential contender in the recently announced Superyacht Cup Performance Class, which will join the popular Original Superyacht Class and the non-spinnaker racing Corinthian Spirit Superyacht Class - itself introduced in 2017 - at the 2020 edition.
A competitive fleet start will be the defining feature of the new Performance Class, which will see racing under the RRS on a separate course to entries in the two other classes.
Aside from the overall Superyacht Cup - won in 2019 by Win Win, the Javier Jaudenes designed Baltic Yacht - owners, skippers and crews will also be in contention for the Boat of the Day presented by North Sails trophy. Dedicated to the memory of North Sails founder Lowell North and awarded in recognition of his inspirational contribution to sailmaking, the inaugural presentation in June went to SYC first-timer Huckleberry.
Registration is open for The Superyacht Cup Palma which will run from 17-20 June 2020, with the Notice of Race at www.thesuperyachtcup.com/en/sailing-documents
The regatta gets under way with the Captains Briefing on Wednesday 17 June followed by the Welcome Cocktail Party, the first event of a full and varied social programme centred on the Race Village located in the heart of Palma.
Post-racing Happy Hours return each day, as does the highlight of the Superyacht Cup social scene, the Owners' Dinner at the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort, SYC's Preferred Hotel Partner.
