Building a Weather Picture

One of the most important skills for successful cruising is understanding the weather and how it impacts your plans. This doesn't mean being a meteorologist, making your own forecasts, or interpreting esoteric weather charts. Rather, it means selecting the right forecast from professional meteorologists (NOAA, Environment Canada, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), utilizing real-time weather data from the multitude of weather reporting sites along the coast, and adjusting cruise plans accordingly.

Below is the process I use to gather and interpret the myriad information available.

Look ahead. Preparation for crossing any of the gates in the Pacific Northwest starts many days before the planned voyage.

Day 33: Flotilla to Alaska
We had great weather again and the conditions in Chatham Strait were calm. e also saw a large number of Dall's porpoises! They splashed and jumped and surfed our bow wakes for long stretches of time. Posted on 11 Jun

Red Bluff Bay to Warm Springs Bay is about 21nm, straight up Chatham Strait Chatham Strait can be challenging, and even 10-15 knots of wind can make for a bumpy ride. But we emerged from Red Bluff Bay to find another calm and glassy day on Chatham. Posted on 7 Jun

Le Conte Glacier is the southernmost tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere We decided to spend three nights in Petersburg. Part of the reason was practical: we arrived late in the afternoon, will depart in the morning, and will spend a full day out at Le Conte Glacier. Posted on 1 Jun
Days 22 - Flotilla to Alaska
Meyers Chuck to Thoms Place We awoke to decidedly un-Alaskan weather: bright sun (even at 4:00 a.m.), warm temperatures (eventually the mid-70s), and light wind. With only four hours to get to Thoms Place, we didn't rush out of Meyers Chuck. Posted on 28 May

Ocean Falls to Shearwater Cruising on the Central Coast is mostly about anchoring, so the occasional visit to a marina is usually accompanied by a flurry of chores. No other marina or town on the Central Coast offers the convenience and capability of Shearwater. Posted on 18 May
