I wonder if a dedicated trade area, (by subscription) where folk can come on and pimp their wares without the usual 'outing' they might get for appearing to be surreptitious. I'm not sure what the forum rules are regarding trade and advertising, but if by some small commercial gain, we continue to enjoy the forum maybe with some future enhancements, it wouldn't be a great inconvenience, personally I quite enjoy reading about new products, having said that, I'd sooner see them, and they'd be more effective if they were in a dedicated zone I reckon.

That way we none commercial folk don't have to feel slightly uneasy about offering ourselves as a 'market' rather than a discussion group. I'm not commercial here, but I could so easily be, it would get very boring indeed but as things stand I still feel it's taking the piss a bit since I don't advertise, but if there were a subscription area, not sure how you'd do it, can't imagine it would be to difficult, we have one on the Kiteboarder forum I frequent, it's something I could join if I felt it relevant.

It could also elicit more informed posts from the seething silence that is often the business, we know they're out there serial lurking, we know they hate all the bollox, but maybe in a controlled area, there might be more stuff to talk about, I don't think we should be prevented from commenting good or bad, that's the whole purpose of discussion groups and it does offer albeit a slightly perverse market research (perverse in that mostly y'all are doddery old wood botherers Wink)

What does everyone else think?

Not sure I understand what you are suggesting? An area of the forum with read & write access only available by subsricption, where companies can pimp their goods?

Paid for access by subscription so that stuff like new product announcements, releases, questionnaires get placed with no reason to abuse...

Whereas in the main body, companies have been subject to what can I say, slightly uncomfortable discussion, at least, I get the feeling there is discomfort among those slightly thinner skinned than cyrus sailboats when it comes to publicising their wares, maybe I'm wrong...

I think it's a good idea in principle... however, if a trade bod is upfront, honest and clear, then I've never had an issue in seeing them pimp their stuff.... as long as they accept they'll get genuine feedback, some of which they might not like.

If you look at the boards forum, there's that 'site news' section, which is essentially trade re-hash press releases users are supposed to comment on... no one looks at it, other than to find an angle to take the piss out of the CIC or sl*g off the Magazine/Industry again.

No, not saying you have, but 'they' might feel less inclined as a result of some of those who have suffered the trials of hercules.. trying to get anybody here enthusiastic about their new wares if they aint RS sailboats  Wink

Then even they fight shy, if it's mediocrity or not everyone's cup of tea, example we never heard much about the wimmens boat, nor the Aura and what was going to happen/could happen to it other than peaky trying to nick bits for scrap.

yep- they got such an easy ride when the RS500 prototype came out  LOL  They had to rely on a good chunk over enthusiastic, misguided, slihgtly antagonistic 'noob' to help them out iirc.

Why would anyone with a commercial interest want to discuss the Aura here?  It was only ever going to go into production if it got selected, and last time I checked, the womens skiff threads weren't excatly ringing with feedback from aspiring olympians in tight fitting lycra sailing suits.  It was us lot saying, yeah it's black it must be cool, or isn't that just a cherub with a new mainsail?

I'd love to see far more kit feedback, engaging with the manufacturers / suppliers, sh*t this community are happy to waste their money/birthday present vouchers on... hiking pants, buoyancy aids, trapeze harness, boat polish, new shackles, carbo-ratchet-ball-bearing-raced-go-faster blocks that are a 'must have', alternatives to tic-tacs and how much argos charge for crap casio these days etc.

If someone from P&B came on and said, 'yeah we've had mixed feedback on those XXXXX hikers; we're finding they just don't fit skinny legs so well, so we'd recommend (suitably hyperlinked) a.n.other brand instead for the tall and thin' then I think, yes, that would be quite a good feature.

I think we need a yachts and yachting style swap show, "hey i need a  newmainsheet, ill swap a such and such goods for it"  it would be brilliant.- Just an idea.  Also GRF your idea does sound good because you guys kinda did rib into jack sail an awful lot. ( ullman endorsed).

Yes that would be a good idea, I've got an almost new spinnaker chute for an RS700 surplus to requirements that I'd love to swap for something useful.

As to jack sails, goes a bit against my personal grain, i hate rip off artists that trade off other folks hard work, so for me a bit of a personal thing, then trying it on in forums being the pseudo web 2 idea of viral marketing, the webs changed, lots of us have wised up to that, make them pay to advertise or shell out on adwords, then maybe they'll see why RS have to make a margin.

Then again if there were a trade zone, they could pay along with everyon else, mark gets a bit of an income stream and we don't feel like they are chiselling a free ride from our contributions, which at the end of the day is the content that makes the place real.
