Thanks for the tips.....was on the safety boat laying marks this sunday and I concluded that altough a compass wasn't strictly necessary a wind direction indicator did make life easier. The finger in the air method (which some use) just isn't accurate enough...We set the course windward leg bang on but the wind veered a little but not too much. Pulling a mark up between races to adjust didn't take long.....easily managable. No run, the OOD insisted on a triangle. Oh well....

One query did come up and that was length of race.....it was a small course as per OOD's instructions......we had some grumbles (not really grumbles, I asked for feedback) as the faster boats finished in 20 mins.

So questions:

How long would you like a race to take (mixed fleet)?

As OOD would you state the number of laps on the course board or would you aim for a duration in time?

Personally I never set a number of laps. If the wind gets up and people race round you end up with a stupidly short race. The time of next race/lunch/tea break/sunset/normal home time whatever defines how long a race should be.

We normally sail until the S flag and grand prix finish so if people do fewer laps we average lap them.

pretty much corresponds with my thoughts. I suppose duration also depends on who is racing and what the conditions are like and how long a piece of string?.......I was just wondering what your individual preferances were.

We normally set a high number of laps and then shorten the leading boat between 45 mins and 1 hour.

Occasionally we do get the correct number of laps which does confuse people!

We sail 4 short races, 25 to 30 mins. Everybody sails 2 laps who only sail 1 and we then double their elapsed time; Does mean we can only sail triangles or windward leewards when the Picos are sailing.

It seems it's horses for courses then.....more short ones or fewer longer ones, although 1 hour races would be considered a bit long here.

We (I) normally would put 40-45 mins duration on the board and do whatever laps coincided, use the S signal  and then average. Course size making a lap of 10 mins approx.

Because laps were stipulated and done this week there was no (usual) S signal, people weren't sure they had finished and carried on sailing........Maybe I shouldn't have asked for feedback

shows tide has more of an influence than most comeptitors and ROs give credit for....ahow far off the windward mark should be offset from the true wind
