How many races?

When I was at wilsonian, we had 2 races a day each sunday. One in the
morning, stop for lunch and then out again for another.
Now I've joined swanage I feel as if the afternoon is being wasted. They only
do one race in the morning and then that's it. Having not been a member of
many different clubs, I was wondering what the norm is??
How many races in a day does your club have and are they back to back or
spaced through the day?

Yonks ago when I sailed at Oxford SC they ran three races on a Sunday. At the time, I felt that was too many - by the end of the day the distinctions had blurred and each race somehow seemed less significant individually. For club racing, two races a day - one either side of lunch - suits me best.

For opens, I also find three races per day too many, especially if they are each a decent length. By the time I've driven to the venue, rigged, rushed onto the water, done the races, come ashore, sorted accomm, scoffed something, I feel knackered rather than satisfied, esp. if the races are split by a lunch-break. Two longer races back-to-back would be my optimum, leaving plenty of time for sorting stuff ashore.

That said, this year we did the Langstone Race Weekend. I was a bit dismayed to find there was only one race a day. But in the end we really enjoyed the relaxing schedule, leaving plenty of time for socialising ashore, and even a bit of local exploration. The weather was perfect for tourism, however....

How long do club races last?

Most of ours are 60-75 min. (we are on a pond). We are debating having a short race of 40 min on a Saturday as it is felt that our younger sailors in Oppies and Toppers are put off by the lengh of the race otherwise.

We have 3 races at Hunts. First race 11:30 on Sunday, then a leisurely lunch with the second race at 13:30, last race a 15:15.

Time for a reasonable break between each race (we are only a small pond).

Doug - It's Swanage. The afternoon isn't wasted - it's for getting wasted!

The club has a membership base which can't commit to a full day of racing (unfortunately). It's been discussed before, but there just isn't the desire to hold two races, back-to-back or otherwise
