I just noticed this term in the online report of the Grafham Grand Prix. I wouldn't want to belittle the accomplishment of the 29er sailors who won a race even with a course optimised for asymmetrics. What would a course optimised for asymmetrics look like? |

I assume no tight 3 sail reaches - all sausages and no triangles maybe?

For our Nationals and Inlands we ask for Windward Leeward, with or without short spacer leg at the windward mark to stop boats beating getting munched by boats heading dead down wind to hoist. Sometimes we add a downwind gate to increase the fun when picking the angles downwind. |

A ha, that's the point, a windward/leeward may be more fun for the asymmetrics but its actually optimised for symmetrics to win.

On the Asym and cat course, we were sailing UW/DW and a Cat won. (Not me, I was upside down after having to avoid one of the large number of Asym's that had fallen over

Course optimised for asymetrics would be a single reach, broad enough to get fully powered with the kite and use the apparent to bear away just enough to do it in a straight line...also it would have the wind arranged to be totally consistent and enough for them to get blasting but not quite enough for all those nice traditional classes to get moving properly...can't have a windward leg incase a traditional boat playing the windshifts does better... |
