Just to add, that my response i.e. duck taping laminated paper to the bulkhead is on a Europe - keep the pen in my buoyancy aid pocket. Not capsized yet whilst trying to write, or if all else fails - make sure you aren't leading and someone else knows where they are going!!!
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Follow the leader used to work but when you are in one of the faster boats it gets a bit harder...

Most common problem was not reading the sailing distractions properly and having to take them on the water to remember starting sequences and courses.  This worked ok in the light stuff but anything above a F3 meant that the instructions tended to disintegrate halfway up the first beat!

On single trap boats, you attach a piece of laminated paper to the helms buoyancy aid so the crew can write and read stuff whilst trapezing!!!

Here's a vaguely connected question:

I HATE wearing my glasses sailing: 1) I worry that they'll come off & i won't be able to drive home 2) I worry that they will smash & hurt me 3) the slightest bit of water on them makes it completely impossible to see anything.

What do other short-sighted people do? I am only slightly short-sighted, which means I tend to think I can manage without my glasses but I have been known to get the marks in a muddle, especially on long courses!

Lucy Lee ....contact lenses!

though I guess this is stating the obvious and there are reasons why some people can not get along with, or use them. You can get cheap lenses that you wear just for one day. Ask at a good opticians, see if they can offer any help or ideas! I wear lenses, though I do find they are prone to 'drying' when facing the wind. cheap sunglasses help with this.

A 2nd cheap pair of glasses just for sailing,

Hmm. I have always been really put off contact lenses because it  took my sisters weeks of agony to get used to them, but that was years ago. Also all those lotions & pots and paraphanalia seem like a huge hassle (knowing me I'd forget the one vital ingredient!). Maybe the one-day ones are the answer

Do you have to sign up for a whole year? I think I'd find that a bit of a waste of money seeing as I'd only wear the things at sailing events.

'spose there is always laser surgery...

Lucy Lee, Hi

Try good old Boots Opticians.

Lenses are something like 60% water these days, they dont' hurt at all.....wait a mo......I have just scrunched my eyes up and, nope I can't even feel mine at all. These days you have only one bottle of lotion to worry about... lenses soak over night.  The 'daily wear' type, even more simple, you bin them at the end of the day no fuss!! not sure about costs though. As for signing for a year, you might find you can buy as req. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Headfry, I'll look into that in the New Year.

Dr C: Someone's got to keep the boat flat, all the helm seems to do these days is grumble about rudder loadings!

I sail with glasses on, usually sunglasses though, whatever the weather, as it means when I get a facefull of water I don't close my eyes. Better to have your glasses covered in water than close your eyes at that inopportune moment.

Perhaps buy a cheap pair of glasses that if you do scratch/break it doesn't matter.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Yea I like sunglasses as goggles too.  But I do find they tend to steam up this time of year.
