Anyone know of a professional alloy mast straightening service? I broke a shroud a while ago whilst gybing in fairly wild conditions and my insurance company (who shall remain nameless) says (paraphrasing here) it's a wear and tear issue on the shouds and I should have looked after them. They will not buy me a new mast or give me anything towards one but they will pay to have it straightened. Any ideas? |

Who is your insurer Matt?
That is the first instance i have heard of anything like this. When I Broke a shroud on a Fireball a few years back the insurer paid p with no quibble (but it was Noble Marine). Paul |

Did the shroud break at an open point or within a crimp where you couldn't possibly have seen it or been aware of it??

From your description of the conditions, your shroud broke and the mast became bent, because you gybed in windy conditions. Surely this is what you have your insurance for. Would they have paid, if the shroud broke and the mast became bent during a capsize? I don't know of any repairer who would offer a mast straightening service. They'll all be too frightened of breaking it and you then blaming them. Ask your insurer, who they would suggest could carry this out. You also need to know what would happen, if while trying to straighten the mast, it's made worse or breaks. Would they pay for a new one then? Or what would happen if you manage to straighten it enough to sail again, but it subsequently breaks, tearing your sail, putting a hole in the boat and causing injury to a member of the rescue craft that come to your assistance. What are they going to pay out for then? You will need to convince them, that it would be cost-effective for them to pay your claim for a new mast now, and consider themselves fortunate that you were able to return to shore without further damage. Jon

On my boat the trapeze wire is attached to the shroud by 2 talurit crimps and the shroud broke below the lowest crimp. I inspect my rigging every time the mast comes down to travel (at least 4 times a year) and there was certainly no obviously broken wires. |
