Tried one many moons ago, probably sailed it at the wrong place for it to be a fun experience. Anything that gets you on the water has to be a good thing, but I suspect that what GRF is looking for does not exist or will be simply too challenging … I cannot help thinking that he will go in a loop of complexity and realise that he could go as fast on a board, which he can carry up the beach

Back to the Musto and some serious application of time on the water maybe?

Not my business to tell anyone what to do but I also wondered about Musto suitability, Farr 3.7 is short and twitchy.
I had a club mate with a Musto and he swore the hull form was more stable than a Contender. Being so light, I wonder if a Musto could still perform well with a smaller rig in 49erFX style.
Contender is heavy and long with considerable wetted area, can't see it going well with less sail. Sweet spot for short lightweights such as myself and perhaps iGRF is when I'm straight leg wiring and the big boys are still perching. |

IIRC Graeme had a Musto back when he first came over from the dark side

Have you got any pictures to post up of this Contender?
Is it brand new? Bonezzi or Hartley, etc.? What mast/sail will you use?

It's an old boat but in exceptionally good nick couple of previous careful owners and one who didn't use it too much, my local Contender hot shot came down with me to inspect and pick it up. Is it a Bob Hoare built model (don't profess to know much about history except to avoid Rondar) wavelenght sail which is pretty much the de rigeur preference and a crispy new P&B which is an unknown quantity I think the sail no is 704. Has a carbon mast and boom which is good and I already have a spare skinny carbon to mess about with in the fullness of time, but it didn't do me any favours on my fireblade (hybrid) experiment which failed its perfomance platform for trapezing test, it's still a great hiking single hander and an absolute demon in the light but it's not going to get me anywhere on my quest to beat the Contenders. So if you can't beat them....

AIUI, Keith Paul used to race one pretty effectively with a sail cut short in the leach? Otherwise, forget about walking under the boom, there is a story of a Contender forestay pulling clean out of the deck at a Plymouth Nationals, the mast didn't even fall down because the clew was nearly on the aft deck anyway.

Ask me about the new kitchen makeover I've had to cough up as penance, that's doing fine thanks, as to the Contender it's exactly where I parked it up on the drive last year, whilst the torrent of grand people, their parents, their parents dogs, their xmas gifts, their vehicles and all the other detritus of modern xmas passed through. Then the beach replenishment started, every year they wait for the perfect time (just before the winter storms that come along and remove their efforts) giant tonka toy articulated monster dumpster trucks carry shingle the length of Princes Parade (about two miles), we longingly look on from the coffee shack we visit, wishing we could be monster truck drivers and plotting to put in a bid for the contract just for the joy. Meanwhile forget launching new Contenders over the ruts they create and contemplate designing a revolutionary Contender launching sled with a block and tackle device attached to the promenade wall. Rig Contender on the sled, sail it down the beach, as Contender floats off, a rope attached to the rear of the boat engages and pulls the sled back up the beach. The rope being continuous attached to weighted buoy drop below low water mark and on return, reverse process. I wish... |
