Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, and my first post. Looking for some advice re changing the rubber joint on my tiller extension (see pic). Do the aluminium rivets need drilling out, or is it just a push fit into the green bit. The extension itself rotates, so i can't see how it is fixed. Thanks  Edited by Rusty69 - 16 Jul 18 at 5:41am |

Mine have all had a screw through the side, the rivet in your photo looks to high, don't think they are that long, could just be glued in, the stem has two ridges round it.

Thanks. The whole thing rotates, so don't think its glued. I agree, the rivets look too high. I wonder if the green bit is riveted in, and the rubber joint fixed to the green bit within the tiller extension.

I've never seen an arrangement like that. I'd be inclined to take the rivet out just to find what is going on, unless someone who knows pipes up. Or, if you know the manufacturer of the extension, email them and ask how to change the UJ.

Agree with Jim's suggestion to remove the rivet and see what is going on. I usually fix mine in with screws which works well. Also suggest that for the replacement you buy the type of joint which has string in the centre of the joint so that when the plastic joint breaks (it will), you still have contact with the tiller rather than having the extension free in your hands.

I've had one like that, it's an interference plug into the green bit, which in turn is riveted, the problem is finding another UJ that matches it so I had to take the whole thing out, in fact I seem to recall sawing the end off, I hate rivets and all they represent, (typical retarded dinghy technology).

Funny you should say that, i just sawed the end off. The green bit doesn't want to come off at all Looks like a bit of a stupid design to me. |

Strange, if that UJ rotates freely, you'd think it would just pull straight out. I would have assumed the rivet fixed both the green insert and the UJ. It doesn't look to high to me. I would never leave one of those UJs inserted and held by friction alone, I'd always run a self taper in or bolt through.  |

Ok, just pulled out, but the green bit shot over the side of the boat, lost to the tide. Looks like a new tiller extension now. Any recommendations?

I wouldn't recommend spending too much money on a tiller extension. Aluminium is fine, especially on anything under 1.5m. Making your own with bamboo is probably the cheapest and lightest option. If you need carbon, then you can buy from here then fit your own UJ.... but, like I said I don't think there is any benefit from going carbon until over 2 m. Less still if you're prone to breaking them. Get a sea-sure UJ. Much better than the one you have now IMO.
