...or indeed offer age-ranges to choose from in a drop-down menu.
Edit: I think the thing that bugged me initially was the way it appeared the organisers had simply thrown the kitchen sink at us without thinking about what they really needed: right, all of you complete all fields; we might not need them all but we can't be bothered to decide what do and don't need, so just do the lot. Maybe organisers should be provided with a very basic template, with minimal info reqs, with the option of adding questions if they feel they are really necessary. Maybe more to the point organisers should be provided with good advice about their obligations under the Data Protection Act.

Yes, RS have decided to do this for all their events. Although not an issue in itself, what has happened a couple of times is that I enter an event online from Zambia. After entering all the details etc, the internet connection is so slow that the form times out before I get to the payment stage.
If you try and re-enter then you get an error message saying that the boat has already entered the event. That said, it is really good when you enter that you know who else has entered and that there will be a (hopefully) decent turnout.

Much race organisation I've come across is so chaotic, with ever-changing personnel, you'd need a reminder every committee meeting. Of course, clubs should have someone responsible for data protection, just as they should publicity, but people leave, no replacement volunteer can be found immediately and stuff gets left undone. We're just volunteers, after all, and amateurs at that.

All the more reason to keep it as simple as possible. If there are no perpetual trophies that need finding before the next year you don't need an address (and even then you could just get it from the winner at the time), if you are working via email you don't need a phone number, tick boxes will do for whether you qualify for veteran trophies, an U18 tick box to show both parental consent and junior trophy qualification. So, name(s), email (twice as a check for mistakes), tick boxes. Add on the blurb needed about insurance and the rules, and aren't you there?

Even more worrying is that this information is not even collected over a secure connection.
