This has the risk of sounding like I'm moaning... again. I'm not, but I am genuinely interested to get folks thoughts on this.
Three of the next four weekends at Chew are given over to the Firefly, RS200 and Fireball Inland Championships. It is great that such large and prestigious classes want to come here, very flattering and presumably good for the club coffers. The Fireballs are sharing the water with club racing (different patch of water though), but the 200s and Fireflies have the lake to themselves, so no club racing. In the case of the 200s, we can expect a good high number of boats that would make it difficult to accomodate club racing too, but the Firefly Inlands were actually the weekend just gone and had 20 boats, which included one club member. The vast majority of the others were from local universities and schools, who I guess sail on the lake anyway but never for Sunday racing. I am very happy for everyone to enjoy the delights of Chew (1200 acres of water in an AONB, what's not to like?), and I happily accept that sometimes opens are so big that club racing needs to put on hold, but in this case it seems unnecessary. Should the club not have arranged so many Inland champs so close together? Should the Firefly class have made more attempt to support the event? Please come back, but next time bring enough of you so that I don't look out thinking I'm missing out on a weekends sailing for no good reason! Or do what the Fireballs do and share the water. good rant... I guess the income from non-members outweighs the inconvenience to those who do pay annually.
I can't really see the rational case for running opens really.... good job someone does I guess ![]() Edited by kneewrecker - 07 Oct 14 at 4:51pm |

A consideration may be staffing events. It can be a struggle to put together two complete race/support teams to run club racing at one end of a lake and an open event at the other.
Open meetings are of course also advertising for the club. If you're moving area or just moving club for some reason then surely a club that's put on a good open for your class has got to be very high on the list of places to check out. Edited by JimC - 07 Oct 14 at 5:06pm |

Good point Jim. I think its excellent that Chew hosts events like these - it just gets frustrating when there is no sailing (and I can't make the one week when there is sailing). Especially as I have new boat I want to play with!

Are you allowed to go free sailing? We sometimes have to cancel Club racing due to lack of volunteers but always allow free sailing.

It must be frustrating to have them scheduled so close together, such that you can hardly get afloat for a month. At least I have the tides as an excuse when I schedule events on the river; Chew must just be going with the classes desires.
In the case of a small fleet like the Fireflies, we'd just have given them their own starts ahead of the club races, and with the space at Chew, maybe their own distinct course to sail onto to avoid interference from the clubbies.

Good point. You could even disappear to a quiet part of the lake and (gasp) do some training. ----------- Doing a quick search of the YY news pages suggests that although 20 to 30 seems typical for a Firefly Inlands, last time they were at Chew, in 2009, they got 44. We joined in the back of the Snipe Open we held recently and our two Snipes times were extracted into the club results very pleasant it was too, watching how the top Snipe guys tactical approach to the tidal situation (only one got it right and I'm not entirely sure he planned it )
We'd like more Opens, this one was due to their water getting unexpectedly closed (Blue Circle), It would be nice for instance to see the Contenders, or we wondered about staging an ad hoc Laser Open, not sure how well that might go down. But whatever we do, we'd accommodate our own racing, then we do have a fair bit of room if not resources. Edited by iGRF - 07 Oct 14 at 6:51pm |

We used to close the water, but not for a decade or more. Either they use a Saturday, muck in with club racing (5 mins earlier/later) or both. Makes the club far more vibrant on the shore to have club members around - a much better ad for the club and for the class if each sees the other.
Not sure why the Firefly class isn't getting better turnouts for these types of events, seeing as there are loads out there doing club racing or team racing. Mind, I've not been to a Firefly event for several years myself. Out of the habit, I guess, and with Lightnings, Minisails and club stuff, hard to find the time or energy. Must be similar for others. |
