Until now, I've completely steered clear of all this working out results on handicap nonsense other than to moan about it on here and try and fathom some logic to it all, there is none, I have however come under a little pressure from the sailboard community to try an get something formal organised for Boards. I've noticed Sailracer and Simon Lovesy who kindly posts on here from time to time, but there's another outfit, Sailwave is it?

So could someone explain what you do, how you use these two, are they similar, does one work better than the other, what algorithms do they employ (one of them spits out a yardstick recommendation apparently) can't remember which one it is and of course which one if possible runs native on a mac or is it a cloud software web browser sort of deal?

Explain as if addressing a child please(I'm sure there are lots of others who read these things that up until now neither know nor care), my crew has put his back out, I'm thinking of finding him something useful to do, but he's totally new to sailing and all your bollox, so words of not too many syllables please... (I'm not saying he's a child or thick, i want it explained simply to me as well, I'm not totally stupid but sailing stuff generally, if there are two ways to do things, an easy and a difficult way you know which way you lot choose..)it is also 2014 and Windoze is dead, an iPad app is my preference and Mac compatibility a definite.

1) How do we go about recording the result on these programmes?
2) Which one do we use?
3)Then Uploading them to a central site.

Their websites suck by the way.

I thought sailwave was simply a free computer programme, and sailracer an organisation, so I think I need educating too.

Sailracer is a site for collating your results and doing some analysis (I seem to recall it is part of the PYS online system or vice-versa).

Sailwave is pretty simple for working your results out and you can then upload it directly to PYS online to do your return and it will give you back suggested numbers and a confidence factor

SailRacer is a company,  we have an office and staff

We organise events like SailFest and SailJuice Winter Series

We provide support to other events with things like GPS tracking,  websites,  analysis and online coverage etc eg Techno Worlds (400+ boards)

For the RYA we run the PYS system,  collecting and processing thousands of handicap results etc.  We also have a database of over a million results.

Sailwave is an excellent  piece of scoring software run by volunteers,  we have integration between our respective systems,  so you can score a race with Sailwave and upload to SailRacer for promotion etc

Both Sailwave and SailRacer belong to the Sailing Software Alliance,  a group of providers focussing on sailing and looking to co-operate to improve the end solutions in what is a very small market

So you need both then?

Sailwave is ancient, 2001 low tech, needs a steam PC to work, that Sail racer looks more recent but does it do the same thing, it's not obvious from its website..

Don't shoot the messenger,  the key is there is now a centralised resource of data to help the decision making process,  moving away from the finger in the air bar talk of the past.  Although early days,  we are starting to see many different ways of doing scoring using lots of data

Sailwave runs fine on all versions of windows I believe....I certainly had no issues when using it on WIN7 (not tried it on Win8/8.1 yet).
