We're on the case with new defences - it's always a balancing act between making it easy to join and hard for the spammers. We're definitely at the point where we have to rebalance it.

In the meantime we'll delete the spam as quickly as we can.

The new defences seem to have worked last night....but these spammers are a wily bunch and their attacks evolve.

In the meantime my inbox is like a war zone!

Enjoy the peace whilst it lasts!

Good work!
Presumably these things search for key words in genuine posts? So when Graeme mentions ad*das and handb*gs, and Tickle mentions k*tch*ns, it acts like a magnets to these bots?
(my *'s, I didn't want to tempt fait!)

It's more likely Maxibuddah mentioning Ginsters, you cracking on about Virginia's Secret (can't believe I let someone wearing female underwear in my boat) and Pondmonkey researching premature ageing symptoms..

Curiously, despite James' best efforts, there has been no spam about coffins.

I like the idea of people having to answer a question about sailing to register... not because of spam, but just for the sake of it. But would we ask an easy one - who won Gold in the Finns at the 2012 Olympics? say, or something trickier - Who won the 1964 OSTAR?

In a world with Web search engines it hardly matters... Nor is it much use

harsh Toby- I'm wounded.   LOL You won't find much 'pimping' for Solos from me, not that it's a bad boat, in fact for 'a boat' it's quite nice, but nothing special.  I'll admit to thinking PY racing week in week out ain't of interest, but it really isn't my fault that everyone else chooses Lasers or Solos as our singlehanded boat of choice for fleet racing.  As it happens on Sunday, there was ONLY Solos and Lasers racing in the singlehanders!!!

I can think of 5 or 6 boats I'd rather we had as viable options.  But what am I supposed to do?  Spend what precious little sailing time I get sailing X, hoping one day some of those guys'll take notice and join me; or just fall in line and accept that we're fortunate enough not to have lost the precious class racing?

A set of questions is surprisingly effective, on a forum I run I set it up so that new registrations need to answer two random questions out of a list of 20. They are mostly sailing terminology so "what r is used to steer a boat?". The number of new spammers joining dropped from over 10 per day to not a problem.

The spam bots can't get through it needs a human and a little bit of knowledge.

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right
