Super Boats to descend on the Space Coast

Cocoa Beach, the Florida town that calls America's National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) a neighbour, will welcome thousands of horsepower this weekend (August 20-22), but there won't be a rocket in sight.

The horsepower will be in the engine bays of the ‘hot fleet' expected to turn out for the Thunder on the Beach Space Coast Grand Prix, the fifth stop on the National Series Circuit staged by Super Boat International (SBI).

SBI President John Carbonell first introduced a race at Cocoa Beach 20-years ago, but believes the time is ‘now right' to make a return to the venue.

'The local community here has a lot to offer, not only to the crews that come here to race, but the fans that flock in for the weekend to catch all the action,' he said.

Teams will arrive from across the USA to compete in the Thunder on the Beach on the Sunday, many expressing ‘a ferocious desire to win'.

Cocoa Beach is the mid point in the 2010 season and every team is looking to accrue valuable points and consolidate their position on the points score table.

The big Fountain, ‘Team Instigator', owned and throttled by Peter Meyer, is one making a return to the venue.

'I won here in1989 and can't wait to get back,' Meyer said.

Meyer admits he was a lot younger then, but 'so was everybody,' he laughed.

'I've been fortunate enough to post many wins and titles over the years, and I'll be looking to repeat that success this weekend,' he said.

'If not, I can only hope some of those old beachside pubs are still in business.'

Saturday has been reserved for testing while teams will race in compete in their specific classes on the Sunday, with the first race scheduled for 11am.

The field will include vee bottoms and catamarans in varying sizes up to 50' and capable of speeds in the region of 200mph in calm water.

Fans will have a chance to see the boats close-up and meet the crews in Race Village on the Friday.
