SBI Smokin’ The Sound commences in Biloxi

by Super Boat International on 23 Apr 2013
32nd Annual SBI Key West World Championships Loren Morrissey / SBI http://superboat.com/
Super Boat International (SBI) offshore racing season has finally commenced and there is no better place to kick it off than in Biloxi, Mississippi. Race teams and fans are ready for the ninth annual 'Smokin’ The Sound' race event, April 26th – 28th, which is shaping up to be a spectacular weekend. Biloxi and the entire Gulf Coast area rolls out the red carpet for Super Boat, race teams and, most importantly, the fans of powerboat racing.

SBI is excited to return to the waters off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where fans have been witness to exciting races in years past. This year, fans should expect to see some of the most recognized and professional offshore teams competing in offshore racing. Racers and teams come to compete from all around the United States with many coming from overseas. Super Boat International is proud to be the most recognized professional offshore racing organization around the world.

'We are looking forward to going to Biloxi and starting our 1st race of the season. The local organizing committee has really worked hard to put this event together, along with the commitment of Woody Bailey, who has been incredible during the process. We are looking forward to having an exciting race,' comments John Carbonell, President of SBI.

Just to the west of Grand Casino on Beach Blvd, fans can find the dry pits, where the boats are staged during the weekend. This is where the boats will start to arrive on Friday and the teams begin setting up their boats for testing. The newly combined 'Superboat Class', boasting power of twin 700’s or greater, should be very exciting to watch. Many of the other classes provide some of the best, deck-to-deck competition.

Teams and sponsors work in the off-season preparing their race boats to participate in the eight National Super Boat International races taking place across the country. The official points standings will go back and forth during the year, ultimately determining the National winner in each class. However, most teams will make sure their equipment is ready for the final Super Boat event of the year, the World Championships in November in Key West Florida.

Over the years, racing in Biloxi and the Gulf Coast shores have provided some of the most exciting racing to date. The sea conditions are always a variable, one day the seas can be flat and calm and, on race day, they can build up to be quite treacherous. Whatever the weather brings, one thing is for sure… fans can expect some very fast exciting racing.
