Cowes Torquay Cowes - Red FPT of Fabio Buzzi has taken victory in the 50th anniversary , completing a dominant double victory at the British Powerboat Festival. The win sees Red FPT awarded two highly coveted pieces of silverware, the Beaverbrook and Harmsworth trophies. Powered by the 2,400 horsepower of four FPT engines, Buzzi – alongside fellow Italian Emilio Riganti and Englishman Simon Powell – fought off the early challengers, Asia, Hot Lemon and Kerakoll, to record a remarkable fourth Cowes Torquay Cowes title and further cement his already legendary status in powerboat racing. 30 boats started and the early exchanges in very rough seas provided an exciting and competitive spectacle for the crowds lining the shore. By Torbay, the halfway stage of this 178 mile classic, the nip and tuck of the opening exchanges was confined to the chasing pack as Red FPT, averaging speeds of 60mph (96km/h) established its dominance and their only real threat – Chinese entry Asia – fell back with trim problems. 'This win gives me as much satisfaction as my first in this boat 22 years ago,' confirmed a jubilant Fabio Buzzi. 'It is a remarkable craft, but the secret is the engine package from FPT. Reliability is everything in this type of racing, you can’t win if you don’t finish!' The Italian, Mario Invernizzi, and Englishman, Peter Dredge, in Kerakoll crossed the line in second but were later disqualified for losing their life raft in Lyme Bay. Second went to local competitors, Vee Ganjavian and Gareth Williams from Southampton, their achievements in Fury, a 39ft Phantom, was an example of seamanship and bravery over weight and power as they took the most direct route home in dangerously mixed conditions.
