Class 1 Powerboat update on last weekend's accident at the Swedish Grand Prix.

Zabo Racing team principal, Jan Zaborowski, has highlighted the fact that the mandatory safety modifications that the team carried out on their cockpit was the reason that neither of his pilots were injured in last weekend’s Class 1 Powerboat Swedish Grand Prix.

The heart-stopping moment happened when Relekta’s Paul Gaiser and Christian Zaborowski hooked their boat going into the first turn after the re-start of race one.

The boat spun-out into the path of the oncoming Fazza - leaving the Relekta pilots stranded and Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi with nowhere to go and blinded by the spray - careering into and over the back of the stricken raceboat.

'When Fazza hit and went over the boat the propellers screwed through the deck and side of the cockpit, penetrating in three places. There’s no question that the modifications to strengthen the cockpit played a vital role in protecting the pilots' said Zaborowski.

He also confirmed that there was ‘a hell of a lot of work to be done’ to be ready for the Italian Grand Prix in Stresa on Lake Maggiore in October (1-3) - but ‘they would be ready’.

'The main damage was caused by the propellers and rudder of Fazza ripping through the boat. We have to cut away about six metres of deck, the side and the left rear corner which took the main impact.

'We saved one engine but the second needs a rebuild and we will have to replace all the wiring. The work is already underway, the boat is now being stripped back and we are making the moulds and soon can start work on replacing the damaged areas. In all I think we have a minimum of four weeks work to be done.'
