Australian Offshore Challenge, Bass Strait Powerboat Rally returns on February 23rd after a GFC imposed hiatus. First run in 2007, the 2011 event has attracted a strong field of entries from across Australia.

Epitomising the variety and quality of crews taking part is the Biomax team from Perth WA, headed by Campbell Durrant. Running a 26ft Scarab with twin 175 Evinrude E-Tec engines, Campbell has recruited veteran offshore racer Adrian Bright from Queensland to navigate and co-drive.

Campbell explains, 'An event like this provides a really exciting objective and purpose to having a sports cruiser. I considered how the 2007 event was run and the caution and safety factors that were exercised – while still presenting a challenge to the boat owner prepared to go beyond the harbour entrance! Adrian ran his boat as the start-boat and escort for the Victorian coast section in 2007. This, plus his long experience in offshore racing, prompted event organiser Roger Dickeson, to introduce us when my original navigator dropped out.'

Marine engineer Adrian Bright is a former UK Cruiser Class champion and speed record holder, currently based at Airlie Beach. 'Campbell has exactly the right attitude and commitment for this type of event; this enabled us to hit it off straight away. I feel the mutual respect is the team’s strength in facing this challenge. We are already talking about future events and the solid development of the team. I couldn’t be happier', comments Adrian.

The Australian Offshore Challenge is destined to become a series of City to City powerboat rally events, each having overnight stops, basic navigational requirements and some timed sections. Strict weather observance and the longer sections completed in close company, ensures maximum safety. The social aspect and camaraderie that develops makes the ‘Challenge’ a must for anyone looking to use a ‘sports cruiser’ to the full.
