Superyacht Australia's persistence with removing barriers pays off

Superyacht Australia, the peak body representing the Superyacht Industry in Australia, has for some time been working with the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) to simplify issues for foreign flagged Superyachts cruising in Australian waters. Superyacht Australia has worked hard over the past 12 months in appealing to AMSA to understand the unique nature of the Superyacht industry.

Particularly the fact that Superyachts can operate commercially or recreationally and in essence nothing changes apart from the fact the owner disembarks the yacht and charter clients come on board.
In a meeting held in Canberra last week it was made clear by AMSA that whilst there is no separate category within the new Navigation Act for Superyachts, there is the flexibility to allow AMSA to treat Superyachts appropriately taking into account the fact they can either be operating commercially or recreationally. AMSA will only have jurisdiction over those operating commercially.
Mick Kinley, Deputy CEO AMSA stated 'The new Navigation Act gives us clarity of jurisdiction and flexibility to deal with vessels such as superyachts by applying standards suitable to these vessels and their operations. When the new Act comes into force, AMSA will have exclusive safety jurisdiction over commercial foreign flag vessels operating in our waters and we are committed to consulting with sectors such as the superyacht industry to ensure we apply appropriate standards for the level of risk.'
Mary Anne Edwards, CEO Superyacht Australia said 'Our key focus is always trying to make it easier for superyachts to cruise here and enjoy our pristine waters, iconic destinations and events. The positive outcome for visiting superyachts who wish to charter in Australian waters is they now only have one entity they must deal with in regards to safety regulations. AMSA will look after all commercial vessels regardless of which state they are in.
'This and the fact we have been able to gain AMSA’s understanding of the fact that a Superyacht can be operating commercially or recreationally is a big step forward for our industry.'
Superyacht Australia is certainly gaining traction on removing barriers for visiting superyachts making it easier for owners and captains to cruise in Australia.
Superyacht Australia also has a submission sitting with treasury requesting a relaxation of the charter regulations for foreign flagged vessels.
