10 rescued as 55-foot custom Sportsfisherman sinks off Charleston

by Peter Jansen and also Powerboat-World.com on 16 Jul
That sinking feeling - must be awful if it is your boat or you are one of the souls on board... .
A custom 55-foot, Paul Mann, cold-moulded-wood Sportsfisherman sank off Charleston, S.C., on Saturday during the MegaDock fishing tournament. All ten people on board were rescued by a passing boat, before the Coast Guard arrived. The boat, Sportsmann from Kiawah Island, apparently hit something in the water. Charleston marine authorities said the boat had already taken on too much water before they arrived for them to save it.

Saturday was the last day in the MegaDock three-day tournament. About 20 boats had entered, including Sportsmann. Sportsman sunk near Buoy 6 near the Charleston Jetties. Officials received a report that the vessel was taking on water. Marine 101 of the Charleston Fire Department, and members of the North Charleston Police Department marine unit responded. When officials arrived, they found the boat 60% submerged. Although they attempted to keep the boat afloat, they were not successful, since it had already taken on too much water and the water conditions were choppy.

Officials say all ten occupants made it to shore safely aboard a good Samaritan vessel.

I actually spent many enjoyable hours on board Riviera’s delightful 4800 Sport Yacht. Right. What I was referring to was the autopilot, and the reason for that lies in the very sentence immediately preceding this one. Enjoyment.
