As noted in a recent Sail-World story, the moulds for Nahema, a 35m catamaran, have been built by a Brisbane company, mouldCAM. mouldCAM is helping realise the vision of a French customer, who requires Nahema to have luxury inclusions and to 'go like the wind'.
To incorporate the luxury appointments now expected in yachts of this class has, to date, precluded race quality performance. mouldCAM is providing CNC (computer numerical control) moulds which translate the boat design so closely – within 1mm per 10m – that little or no fairing of the boat will be required. It will therefore be a substantially lighter and optimally performing boat.
The project manager of Nahema pursued the growing trend of seeking the world’s best practice in all aspects of boat building and has chosen mouldCAM to achieve a precision result.
Not only has mouldCAM used its CNC technology to provide the accurate and light hull, the Nahema project is challenging in its size. mouldCAM has broken the project down into components in Australia and will reassemble it in the yard in France with no loss of accuracy.
It has only taken five months to cut approximately 1000 sqm of moulds. The delivery of the moulds will be co-ordinated with the boatyard to ensure the moulds only arrive when they are needed and will then be reassembled in only two days.
The almost indistinguishable joins between the 12 m panels will be filled and a final gloss coat will cover the assembled surface. The moulds can then be disassembled and stored or transported elsewhere, for future use.
The Nahema project is a prime example of the coming trend in yachting – customers who want a one off luxury cruiser with grand prix yacht performance – a trend that mouldCAM can support.
