The Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA) is preparing for its first Board Meeting of 2010, to be hosted by the BIA NSW offices in Crows Nest Sydney, 25 February. Executive Officer, Colin Bransgrove is looking forward to a raft of initiatives and programs that will be implemented over the year, benefiting members and the boating community. 'We have six marinas onboard for our Gold Anchor Marinas program, so we will be announcing them following the Board Meeting,' says Bransgrove, thrilled with the response to the rating system. Also coming up is the roll out of Level 4 accredited Clean Marinas scheme. 'We are aiming for the top 5% of marinas nationwide. Obviously, there are a couple of marinas that are already ISO accredited, so they will qualify automatically.' Plans are advanced on the program, speakers and other facets of the Marinas 2011 International Conference, which will be held in Melbourne next year. 'That is just over one year away, so we anticipate promoting that event in the not too distant future,' says Bransgrove. Marinas 2009 Committee Chairman, Mike Harvey will be calling for papers before Easter, from which the speakers and special guests would be drawn. Then there’s the MIAA’s work with Australian Standards to review the marina guidelines, 'particularly concerning fire safety, parking, design, weight and live load'. The MIAA Marine Host program is yet another initiative which will be supported this year – the one day course in each state. Timetable, details and registration available online at www.marinas.net.au 'The other key initiative for MIAA will be the release of data from the Australian Marinas Value Study being conducted in association with Dr Ed Mahoney in the USA,' says Bransgrove, referring to the national study which will render state based data that will prove invaluable for the marina industry to leverage in negotiations with governments and spread qualitative and quantitative findings to the wider community. One of the most significant issues in the marina industry today, according to Bransgrove is rental and lease agreements charged by government management agencies. 'It has been a contentious issue in NSW for a while now, which we are working with the BIA of NSW on, and following the change of management at Brisbane Ports, it's now a concern in Queensland. 'The Board is discussing options with Marine Qld and the BIA NSW. We believe rents must be sustainable during the good and not-so-good times. Rent linked to turnover is a fair mechanism - you know where you stand and there's an incentive for both parties. It's much more beneficial than some of the models mooted by the government management agencies.' More at www.marinas.net.au
