The New Zealand bio-fuelled trimaran powerboat Earthrace is now a third of the way through its second attempt to beat the round-the-world speed record of 75 days. Earthrace has now left San Diego and is now tracking towards Hawaii at 18 knots.

Earthrace left the Vulkan Shipyard at the port of Sagunto, north of Valencia in Spain, at 1235GMT on Sunday April 27.

She has since then travelled 8,000 nautical miles as her crew attemptis to break the U.I.M. world’s record for a world circumnavigation.

Skipper Pete Bethune says his 78 foot wavepiercer is now 1,115 nautical miles ahead of the world record pace.

Bethune has just reported 'In San Diego, it took a total of seven hours to get customs cleared, refuelled, and engines serviced. Not that fast but we had lots to sort. We are pleased to be back underway. '

Their next stop over is Maui, Hawaii 2,350 nautical miles west in the mid-Pacific ocean.
