Seaflex to anchor Palm Jumeirah's pontoons

Umeå, Sweden-based Seaflex has won a contract to secure the floating pontoons in Palm Jumeirah's marinas.

The man-made island will be the first of a number of Dubai mega-projects to feature developments with purpose-built marinas. The pontoons, made by Finnish company Marinetek, float on a depth of 16m (52.5ft) to enable the island's marinas to accommodate the largest superyachts. In total, Palm Jumeirah will feature some 1,200 berths.

The Seaflex system consists of a rubber cable that together with ropes anchors pontoons, buoys and other floating marine infrastructure. It is based on a philosophy of developing environmentally friendly anchoring in demanding conditions. The first system was deployed in 1981 and since then thousands of facilities have been installed across the world.

Seaflex builds upon an invention by Bertil Brandt, and today his son Lars is head of the company, which has a turnover of SEK 20 million. Production is located in Umeå and the company employs a staff of 10. The Dubai order has ensured new business and Seaflex says that the number of employees is expected to increase as a result.
