RYA British Powerboat GP T850 championship was held during the 22nd and 23rd September. Mark Williams (46) from Lowestoft laid claim to his 20th British Powerboat Racing Championship title when he won last weekend.
Williams who earlier in the season secured the 2012 Powerboat GP RYA British F4 Sprint Championship after three straight heat wins, returned to his trusty monohull at the weekend to compete at the final of the British Championships.
The season started back in May with a home advantage for Williams as they competed at his home event in the Oulton Broad Grand Prix. Williams got the season off to a flyer securing three heat wins to take the Grand Prix and kick the season off in style.
Heading to Lancashire for the second round of the competition local racing team 'Last of the Summer Wine' mounted serious pressure on Mark to try and steal the championship lead from him. Mark held them at bay and secured another three heats wins to secure the Lancashire Grand Prix.
Moving to Kingsbury Water Park, Williams led the way in the T850 championship but received pressure from wild card entry, Stuart Williams, that forced Mark to ensure he took the best racing lines and kept the clean water. Williams secured a convincing Grand Prix win and continued to lead the championship.
The Powerboat GP RYA British Championship finals in Stewartby saw the reigning Champion looking to make it four out of four Grand Prix wins in the hopes of retaining his 2011 T850 Championship title for another year.
Setting the fastest time in qualifying, Williams then went on to claim three heat wins to secure both the Stewartby Grand Prix and the 2012 Powerboat GP British T850 Championship title.
TopCat Racing’s Mike Pillow took second in the Grand prix in addition to the British Championship Silver Medal. With Bill Owen taking third in the Grand Prix and Team mate David James securing the Bronze Championship Medal.
On securing the title for another year Williams commented: 'This one was a bit special as it was my 20th British title so it really means a lot.'
Asked what was next for the champion he responded: 'I’m not sure what I’ll race in 2013 I’d like to move to F2 but at the moment finances won’t allow it. My T850 needs some modifications for safety regulations so I may return to F4 but for now we’ll have to wait and see.'
