Boating is as popular as ever in Mackay

Rain, wind and cold temperatures didn’t stop crowds from attending the 2012 Mackay Marine Festival held at Mackay Marina across the weekend. There was plenty to see and do with a fantastic range of boats, engines and marine accessories on display, two Offshore Superboat Races each day and plenty to keep the kids busy with marine workshops, face painting, jumping castles and live music. The Mackay region has the highest boating population in Queensland outside the Gold Coast with one in nine residents owning a boat. Early feedback from exhibitors indicates strong enquiry across all product on display with reasonable sales made across the weekend. This year’s event saw the addition of an on-water display of boats including a new release from Multihull Solutions, several charter operators from Airlie Beach and brokerage boats from Peter Hansen Yacht Brokers. Marine Queensland Events Manager, Jason Plant, said the event is now firmly placed on the association’s events calendar and will continue to grow in future years. 'We had to expand the show’s footprint to ensure space for twice as many exhibitors as last year. This combined with the addition of our on-water displays is a firm testament to the passion and enthusiasm people in the region have for all things related to recreational boating'. 'This event provided a true showcase of what Queensland’s marine industry has on offer with the most diverse range of boat brands on display the region has ever seen.' A highlight of the weekend was the drawing of the Festival’s major prize – a Stacer Tinnie package thanks to Shane Morrison Marine. The response to the competition exceeded expectations with enough entries to fill the Proline’s hull for Sunday’s draw. 'Events like this reignite everyone’s passion for all things boating – from retailers to mum and dad anglers- everyone benefits from events that stimulate both discussion and sales' said Plant. 'We were thrilled to have been part of it.' Dates for the 2013 Mackay Marine Festival will be announced shortly. Marine Queensland is now looking forward to the 2012 Brisbane Boat Show, on 23-26 August at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
