Australia's jet skiing community is today mourning the death of a top young rider at the Australian Watercross Championships on the Gold Coast. Melbourne rider Joseph Scaturchio, 22, was killed in a crash during the event on the Southport Spit about 2.30pm. on Sunday afternoon The championships were immediately abandoned. Australian Jet Sport Boating Association secretary Mandy Brown told the Gold Coast Bulletin it was a 'tragic, tragic loss'. 'Everyone's just incredibly shocked,' she said. 'It's without doubt the worst day of any of our lives. 'Joseph was a magnificent young man and a very accomplished rider who had won many races, including overseas. He'll be sorely missed.' Scaturchio was a member of the Victorian Jet Sport Boating Association, of which his father Tony is president. Mandy Brown said the sporting body would hold a full inquiry into the young riders death. The Queensland Forensic Crash Unit and Water Police are conducting an investigation. Sergeant Lucas Young from the Water Police has appealed to anyone who filmed any part of the fatal race on Sunday to contact Gold Coast Water Police. Apparently it has proven difficult to pinpoint the cause of the crash at the time because the amount of spray being thrown up by the jet skis severely impeded visibility.
