Australia’s leading recreational fishing organisations have announced that an agreement in place to facilitate the formation of a new peak body, the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation (ARFF), to represent the national interests of Australia’s five million anglers into the future.

In a show of unprecedented unity, the leaders of Recfish Australia, the Australian Fishing Trade Association (AFTA) and other significant fishing associations and bodies have this week signed a letter of intent to form the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation and herald the start of a new era in cooperation and unity for Australia’s recreational fishing community.

The Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation will be the national voice for the 5 million recreational anglers and the many businesses that provide the goods and services to support Australia’s fishing community.

The Foundation will advocate for the interests of Australia’s recreational fishers to the Commonwealth Government and their decision makers, and in collaboration with ARFF members, will facilitate community based activities that promote recreational fishing in Australia including:

• Conserving and enhancing the benefits of and opportunities for recreational fishing in Australia
• Educating the community on ethics, best practice and safety aspects
• Educating the community on the physical and mental health benefits of recreational fishing
• Promoting recreational fishing participation with all age groups, gender and ethnic origins
• Educating the community through activities that enhance conservation outcomes and improve the health of environmental habitats that support existing and future fish populations
• Supporting its member organizations to ensure the Australian recreational fishing industry is appropriately resourced and has a structure that can deliver effective outcomes for Australian recreational anglers.

'Just over a month ago at a Parliamentary Breakfast in Canberra, Politicians from the major parties issued a challenge to the recreational fishing community to unite and present their views with a single national voice. We have answered and met this challenge with our intent to form the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation.

'We now expect the commitments made to the recreational fishing community to facilitate this initiative to be met,' said Allan Hansard CEO of AFTA.

'We see the intention to form the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation as a great initiative that will not only create an essential focus for recreational fishing advocacy and policy development at the national level but also provide the mechanism that will strengthen the roles and responsibilities of its supporting members,' said Russell Conway, Chair of Recfish Australia.
