New cruiser pushes its cost credentials

'The styling is straightforward but you get a lot of boat for the money.'    Pelorus Marine    Click Here to view large photo
Pelorus, from the Greek word for 'vast', is not only the world's 19th largest luxury yacht at 377 feet (115 metres), it’s also the ambitious brand name for a new 44-foot trawler-style cruiser from China.

It looks a somewhat conservative offering but there’s no denying that its sub-$700K price tag represents huge value.

Boats of comparable size in this market segment can nudge the million mark, and it’s not as though the Pelorus 44 is short-changed in the option department.

They’re presenting it as 'a gentleman’s cruiser with a young man’s heart', not unreasonable when you consider that dual shaftdrive 370hp diesel engines (Volvo or Yanmar) deliver a top speed of 22 knots.

A hull length of 13.4 metres, combined with a beam of 4.35 metres and beefy displacement of 13 tonnes, suggests reasonable offshore credentials.

Access to the cabin is via sliding glass doors with stainless steel surrounds. Cherrywood furniture and bulkheads greet the eye, and the open spaciousness is also apparent.

There’s a 24,000 BTU air-conditioner to service the saloon, while a 37-inch LCD TV with autolift is another cool feature.

For’ard are the galley (featuring three-burner electric stove, 1000W microwave and refrigerator) and the lower helm station.

Dual staterooms and a private bathroom beckon you to the accommodation level. The master stateroom has a large island berth, the second room has twin single berths with a walkway between.

Where this style of cruiser comes into its own is outdoor living area when moored or under way. A gently curved stainless steel ladder with timber treads leads to the flybridge, where there’s an upper helm and fixed seating for a crowd.
