Sail-World.com : Coniston Powerboat Records Week Day 4

Coniston Powerboat Records Week Day 4

'Ben Jelf - Coniston Powerboat Records Week 2011'

Coniston Powerboat Records Week has now completed day four in which another eleven records, two world and nine national, were set by fearless speed demons.

With entries now up to fourty-one, the highest every for records week, over 151 attempts have been made on the water this week, with even more attempts planned for the final day.

The two big highlights of day four were new World records set by eleven year old wonderkid Ben Jelf in the GT15, on the first run of the day and Ian Wright in the S2000 class.

Ben now becomes the world’s fastest eleven year old on the water, he might even be the youngest British World Record holder ever – this is still being confirmed. After clinching his world record of 42.92mph Ben told us: 'I feel really overwhelmed at the moment. At one point I was going to give up but I just kept on trying. I’m still really shocked with what I’ve achieved.

'It takes lots of concentration when you’re speeding along but it makes me really excited too. I’m so happy with what I’ve achieved today and I would like to thank my Mum and the whole of Team Jelf for their support.'

Ben is planning to hit the water again on the final day so who knows perhaps he’ll break his own record! He also improved on his national UKFFORC S250 record increasing it to 31.92mph.

At a breathtaking 125.36mph Ian Wright literally fly into the history books as she claimed the S2000 class World Record. Ian wasn’t around to share his thoughts on his achievement as his celebrations had already started, however he now joins the prestigious K7 Club, an exclusive club for those who break the 100mph barrier, he also receives a Gold Star.

National records were also set by Peter Hart in the Clubman 1000 cat at 64.70mph. Chris Strickland hit 58.69mph to claim a new national record in the Biboa R1. John Adlard claimed a new national RIB Supersport twin recreation record at 58.88mph, while Helen Loney’s 73.55mph clinched her, the new national VP2.0 record.

'Today has been fantastic', commented RYA Powerboat Racing Officer Nicola Drummond.

'For Ben to take the World record at the start of the day, another great achievement for this wonderful young man and to see a grown man’s face light up like a child at Christmas when Ian got his record, once again it is testament to British Powerboat Racing and how British Powerboaters keep doing their sport proud.'
