Report of tangled whale ends with good news

Marine Rescue NSW
A whale reportedly caught in nets off Manly beach provided a timely exercise for Marine Rescue NSW.

This morning at 7:10 am a passing vessel contacted Marine Rescue Sydney to report a whale caught in nets approximately two nautical miles east of Manly Beach.

After alerting National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and ORRCA operators at Marine Rescue Sydney were able to relay information from ORRCA to the vessel on the scene.

Shortly after, the NPWS requested Marine Rescue to attend the scene and marine rescue vessels Port Jackson 21 and Port Jackson 22 were dispatched to the scene. On arrival they were able to see two whales in the vicinity, both were swimming freely and appeared unperturbed by the attention.

NPWS sources said that whales can sometimes become entangled in fish traps but are usually able to free themselves.

This was an excellent opportunity to practice incident coordination between units in the lead up to the summer peak season with the vessel response only a few minutes after the request for assistance from NPWS.
