Victoria’s calamari season gets off to a bumper start

'Calamari'
Victorian anglers have reported a bumper start to the calamari season this winter with some catches weighing in at two kilograms.

There has already been some great calamari fishing opportunities in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port this year.

Calamari can be caught from piers, boats or kayaks, are great eating and are simple to prepare for the table.

Like other fast-growing and short-lived species, calamari is a highly sustainable fishery.

The predictable habit of calamari to aggregate in accessible shallow areas makes them an easy catch for anglers.

Due to more than one spawning occurring through the breeding season, several groups of similar-sized calamari are present at various times during the year.

Fisheries regulations are in place to ensure calamari stocks are shared among fishers and can be replenished for future generations.

Anyone with a recreational fishing licence can catch up to 10 calamari per day, providing lots of opportunities for anglers.
Anyone who sees or suspects illegal fishing activity is urged to call the intelligence reporting hotline 13 FISH (133 474).
