Organisers of the Sydney International Boat Show are planning to welcome more than 246 students to a career forum during the event, featuring a panel of industry proponents who will showcase some of the incredible opportunities and options available in the broader marine industry.

According to Corrina McMillan, Education & Training Coordinator at BIA NSW, 'the aim of the day is to provide students in years 9 to 12 with information about the wide range of career pathways available in the recreational boating industry, and give them the opportunity to meet and question industry members and service providers about how to get into the industry, the type of jobs and roles on offer, the training options available, and apprenticeships and cadetships in boating.'

Among the speakers are representatives from TAFE NSW, Marine Industries Association of Australia, Australian Business Limited Apprenticeships Centre, BIA NSW, plus others, who will be sharing their knowledge and experience with the students.

'They will present brief overviews of trades and qualifications, apprenticeships, marina management and operations, sales and retail, crewing superyachts, and tourism. I will also be introducing them to the BIA Boating Cadetship - a 12 month cadetship where they are placed with host employers and attend TAFE one day a week for their formal qualification. Also joining us will be Ken Evans (Ken Evans Consulting) who will be sharing his experiences and choices made in his time in the industry, and entertaining students and teachers with a few stories from his past.'

In addition to the presentations, there will be a chance to discuss options one-to-one with the speakers plus others such as NSW Maritime and State Training Services, and various industry members.

'We currently have 246 students and teachers registered in total, which is a fantastic number,' says Corrina. 'It’s great to see so many new faces interested in the boating industry as a choice of career.'

Roy Privett General Manager, Boating Industry Association says youth is a priority for the organisation. 'Education, training, development and services are a priority and vital for the continued success of the boating industry.'

He says he welcomes 'the opportunity that the Sydney Boat Show Careers Day presented and which had become a part of the BIA's multiple strategy to assist the education of boat users, skills development for employers and employees, and advocating a clear pathway to assist young people to education and rewarding career opportunities in the boating industry, where work skills and lifestyle intermingle'.

The boating industry careers day will be held at the Sydney International boat show on Friday 29 July.
