They came for the Super Boat Races, they came to see the very latest in tinnie and tackle wares – but they mostly came to buy!
That’s the word from exhibitors at the first ever Mackay Tinnie and Tackle Show who are anticipating across the board sales to top $1 million.
Thousands of boaties turned out in force to the two day event hosted at Mackay’s Marina across the weekend.
Mackay Tinnie and Tackle Show Event Manager Jason Plant said the turn out surpassed expectation. 'The Mackay region has the highest boat registrations in Queensland outside of the Gold Coast so we were hopeful of hitting the market,' Mr Plant said. 'That was the only real data we had to work on since it was the first show for the area but with a response like this, exhibitors and the public are saying ‘bring on number two.
'Early feedback from exhibitors has great reports on the number of sales made across boats, tackle and accessories. The boats were the heroes of the show with several of the bigger boats being sold before lunch on the first day.'
Hooker Boats rushed to finish a new addition to their range just in time for the Mackay Show providing a national unveiling of their latest offering to locals.
Mackay-based fishing accessories company Castnets Australia sold out of one of their cast net models by the end of Saturday.
'We had such an amazing response - it is a great feeling for the industry to see such levels of retail confidence' Margaret Donald said.
Reef Marine’s Greg Camilleri too was thrilled with his results. 'This is a great move for the local industry,' he said. 'The show’s free entry definitely helped draw the crowds and make it a very affordable day out for the whole family.'
Mackay Marina Manager Ben Anderson said the success put the show as a must event on the Mackay calendar.
'The combination of the Tinnie and Tackle Show and the Offshore Superboat Races meant there was something to keep everyone happy,' Mr Anderson said.
Shane Morrison of Shane Morrison Marine said it provide local businesses with a chance to showcase the diversity of their product ranges.
Mr Morrison said there was a significant and interested response to his spearfishing products'.
Sugar City Marine’s Steve Leigh said the range of Quintrex and Cruise Craft models he had on display were really well received by show visitors.
'We will have a very busy next couple of weeks following up on leads generated out of this weekend’s show,' Mr Leigh said.
For peak Industry body Marine Queensland – the show organiser’s -it is back to business to ensure planning means the next event is bigger and better.
Chief Executive Officer Don Jones said shows like this reignited everyone’s passion for all things boating – from retailers to mum and dad anglers- everyone benefits from events that stimulate both discussion and sales.
'People far and wide will be talking about this show for some time,' he said. 'We were thrilled to have been part of it.'
