Dramatic rescue at Merimbula

'DUC Bob Marsh watched as surf lifesavers attach ropes to upright the up tuned vessel'    Marine Rescue NSW
Merimbula's notorious bar claimed another victim today when two local Merimbula men ventured out across the bar for a morning's fishing.

On the surface it was a beautiful morning said Deputy Unit Commander Bob Marsh, however things went pair shaped within seconds when the Merimbula Bar stood up and dumped upon the small fiberglass fishing vessel. DUC Marsh said the vessel was picked up by the incoming wave and turned completely over dumping both occupants of the vessel in the water, thankfully both men swum the short distance to the beach. Radio Operator Wes Dunn 71, a veteran of a number of serious rescues, observed the incident from the base's radio room, and quickly alerted the local surf club, Water Police and activated Merimbula's Naiad Rescue Vessel- Merimbula 20.

Unit Commander Barry Harrison, DUC Bob Marsh and Boat master Bill Blakeman launched Merimbula 20 to assist with the on scene recovery. Eden Water Police requested Merimbula 20 remove the upturned vessel which was blocking the entrance to Merimbula Lake. Pambula Surf Life Saving Club was on scene with a RHIB and Jet Ski and was called in to cut the vessel's anchor which was embedded into the ocean floor. Once released Merimbula 20 towed the upturned vessel out into the bay where the vessel was righted before being returned to Merimbula Lake.
