Anglers help DPI Victoria reel in coastal award

Department of Primary Industries VIC
The 300 passionate anglers who collect data for fisheries researchers have helped the Department of Primary Industries land a coveted award.

Fisheries Victoria’s Angler Diary Program is the joint winner of this year’s Victorian Coastal Council Award for excellence, in the category of community action and partnership.

The Victorian Coastal Council is appointed under the Coastal Management Act 1995 as the peak body for the strategic planning and management of the Victorian coast and to provide advice to the Minister for Environment and Climate Change.

The Angler Diary Program, based at the Queenscliff fisheries research centre, involves the collection of information about recreational fishing and fish stocks by volunteer anglers.

Executive Director Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst said it provided an innovative, remarkably cost-effective and valuable service to scientists and fisheries managers.

'The Angler Diary Program is in its fifteenth year and has increased our understanding about many of Victoria’s fish stocks,' Mr Hurst said.

'It involves anglers in the sustainable management of our fisheries.

'They are the real winners of this award and Fisheries Victoria would like to thank them for their efforts and commitment.'

The DPI program team is Simon Conron, Daniel Grixti, Natalie Bridge, Pam Oliverio, Therese Bruce, Lauren Brown and James Andrews.

It is jointly funded by Recreational Fishing Licence revenue and Fisheries Victoria.
