Sail-World.com : Special event exclusion zone for ITU World Championship Sydney Swim

Special event exclusion zone for ITU World Championship Sydney Swim

NSW Maritime has declared a special event exclusion zone will apply for the ITU World Championship Sydney Swim to be held on the weekend of 9-10 April at Farm Cove Sydney Harbour.

General Manager Maritime Operations Howard Glenn today reminded recreational boaters to stay clear of the special exclusion zones in place for the triathlon swim or risk penalties.

'Swimmers taking part in the event will have exclusive use of Farm Cove and the area will be sectioned off by yellow lit buoys between Mrs Macquaries Point and Bennelong Point inside Farm Cove,' Mr Glenn explained.

'Skippers need to be aware the special event exclusion zone will be in place on Saturday 9 April between 1.45pm and 3.15pm and Sunday 10 April between 6am and 9am and again from 11am to 2.45pm when swimmers are in the water.

'Preparations for the event begin at 7am on Friday 8 April and end at 4pm on Sunday 10 April. During this time Man o’ War (East) Wharf will be unavailable for use and Man o’ War (West) will be available only by arrangement with NSW Maritime authorities.

'Only vessels associated with the event will be permitted into the exclusive use areas, and NSW Maritime vessels will ensure boaters stay clear of the areas.'

Mr Glenn said recreational boaters considering taking their vessels onto Sydney Harbour on the weekend, should acquaint themselves with the exclusion zones as outlined on the NSW Maritime website.

'There will be hundreds of swimmers in the water so it is imperative that all vessel operators stay clear of the designated area,' he said.

'It is also essential that skippers keep a proper lookout, adhere to speed limits and comply with safety rules.'

Penalties apply to those who do not comply with the boating restrictions in place for the event.
