Twenty knots upwind while relaxing in a spa bath on the foredeck of an 18-metre long yacht . . . It sounds too good to be true, but it is one of the many luxuries to be enjoyed aboard the first of the new Perry MS-59 catamaran motor-sailers when it is launched next month.
This magnificent yacht will be the sailing equivalent of a Five Star resort … one of the most lavish vessels for its size and type ever to hit the water in Australia. Among the extensive list of luxuries is a fully customised furniture layout in the main saloon, plush carpet throughout, a massive flat screen television, even bidets in the bathrooms. And, of course, there’s the spa bath on the foredeck.
The MS-59 is the motor-sailer version of the highly acclaimed Perry 57 luxury cruising yacht, a vessel which stands proud amid the world’s best cruising catamarans of similar size.
The Perry 57 pedigree means the MS-59 will be no slouch under sail, particularly when the wind is in its favour. However, when the owner decides he wants to get somewhere even faster, twin 320hp diesels will spring to life and propel the MS-59 forward at better than 20 knots.
This yacht will deliver a lifestyle that is in keeping with the sailor’s adage: ‘Gentlemen never sail to windward.’
The release of the MS-59 confirms that the Perry Catamaran brand is continuing to gather momentum and strength in the marketplace after highly successful boatbuilder, Allan Barnett, salvaged the company from a dire financial situation two years ago.
And now, with the company’s order book looking healthy, Barnett and his enthusiastic team are looking to the future. They are working on two projects involving the company’s best recognised yacht, the Perry 43 cruising catamaran. More than 50 of this design have been built, and many have undertaken extensive world cruises.
The first project will see the release of an ‘entry level’ version of the design, a comfortable yet basic boat without many of the trappings that have previously been part of the standard Perry 43. This low cost concept will open up a considerably wider market, locally and internationally, to what is already an exceptional cruising yacht.
Also, the Perry MS-45.5, a motor-sailer version of the Perry 43, is under development. The concept is similar to what has been achieved with the Perry MS-59.
