Gibbs is the name, offshore is the game

There’s am old saying that if you want something done, get a busy man to do it.

Frankly, it’s hard to imagine a busier man than Gold Coaster Paul Gibbs; CEO of his own company, Gibbs Truck and Trailer Parts, with a staff of 42 and outlets across the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, boat builder, with three offshore catamarans currently under construction and, if that’s not enough, president of the Offshore Council of the Australian Power Boat Association (APBA)!

Gibbs is no slouch when it comes to offshore competition, either, with five Australian Super Cat Outboard Lite titles to his credit in his boats named ‘Hog’s Breath’, thanks to valuable sponsorship from the renowned restaurant chain.

The last rig carrying the Hog’s Breath name is now owned by Mick Walker, and will race in his colours and sponsorship as ‘Elders.’

Gibbs’ new Hog’s Breath is still a few months away, hopefully completed by Christmas and ready for the opening race of 2009 in February.

Throttleman Paul Fowlds will again team with Gibbs in the new boat, but there will be a pronounced difference.

Gibbs previously raced with Mercury outboards, but the new Hog’s Breath will sport dual 200hp Evinrude E-Tec engines on its transom.

'BRP offered us an excellent deal, including a warranty situation, not easy to come by for engines used in offshore competition,' Gibbs explained.

'Additionally, Evinrude sponsored one of the Sydney rounds last year, so they’re supporting offshore racing and I’ll support them,' he added.

The other differences between the old and the new Hog’s Breath are not so obvious.

'I’ve slightly altered the sponsons, made changes to the bottom and made changes to the width,' he explained.

Gibbs actually has two boats approaching completion at his Labrador workshop, one for a Sydney owner whose name is being kept ‘under wraps’ pending sponsorship negotiations, and the new Hog’s Breath.

Gibbs is a true credit to the sport.

He is prepared to offer his moulds free of charge for anyone wishing to build a Super Cat Lite.

'I don’t build boats to make money, I just want to help attract more people to offshore racing,' he said.

He is also prepared to build boats, ready for painting and engine installation and offer them virtually at cost to prospective competitors.

With the opening round of the ‘08/’09 season, the Redcliffe 100, rapidly approaching (September 21), Paul Gibbs will be adding to his busy portfolio.

Personally, I think offshore racing and the APBA is lucky to have him.

For further information, contact him on 0414 371 122, but you’d better be prepared to make a commitment to offshore powerboat racing.
