Earthrace turns heads in Arendal
|
Earthrace, the eco-boat, that recently smashed the world record for a circumnavigation of the globe by a powerboat, turned heads earlier this week as she gracefully pulled into Arendal’s harbour, the Pollen, to share centre-stage at this weekend’s BMW Norwegian Grand Prix, round four of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. Earthrace, skippered by New Zealander, Pete Bethune, set off from Vulkan Shipyard, Sagunto in Spain on Sunday, 27 April in an attempt to break the record set by British boat, Cable and Wireless back in 1998. She returned to Sagunto on Friday, 27 June to cross the finish line after 60 days, 23 hours and 49mins, knocking almost 14 days off the previous record, having travelled 24,000 nautical miles fuelled by biodiesel to demonstrate and draw global attention to the potential for alternative fuel sources. 'Earthrace’s success has proved that any form of transport, including marine, can be non-damaging to the environment as well as being high performance,' said Bethune. 'It is still early days for alternative fuel and there are issues that need to be addressed by those with the power to make change happen. Later this week, Peter Bethune, will be one of seven guest speakers at a seminar in Arendal to discuss environmental issues and sustainable development within motorsport.
